You’ll find fresh, healthy and tasty Middle Eastern cuisine at Taboon – now open at The Pines Elanora. The modern Middle Eastern café is owned by the Isaacs family, with husband and wife Steven and Siggy Isaacs heading up the family business, alongside daughter Romy and sons Ariel and Tom.
Having been involved in the restaurant industry from a young age, Steven met Siggy in Israel before they moved to Sydney, where Steven opened a restaurant in Watson’s Bay. Relocating permanently to be closer to family on the Gold Coast 11 years ago, they started their first Taboon restaurant at Robina in 2006.
Initially concerned the flavours were too different for Australian taste buds (and before healthy food was “trendy”), they soon gathered a loyal following of customers who kept coming back for more. Now their second Taboon establishment at The Pines offers quick, fresh and tasty breakfast and lunch meals, as well as decadent desserts, and must-try drinks with a Middle Eastern twist.
Some of their unique breakfast dishes include the Breakfast Bowl with eggs, Middle Eastern salad and yoghurt sauce on Egyptian Rice or Shukshooka – eggs poached in spicy tomato sauce and served with pita. They bake all their breads fresh on site every morning, which, come lunch time, are filled with a range of meats including lamb and chicken, or you can skip the bread and have a Lunch Bowl with your choice of meat or falafel and a fresh, healthy salad or Egyptian rice.
Wash it down with a refreshing Mint Tea or try the traditional Sahklab – a creamy milk drink flavoured with rosewater, pistachio and cinnamon.
You can dine at the relaxed tables or grab a convenient takeaway. While they are already selling their Turkish ground coffee by the pack, Siggy says they are planning to bring in beautiful, bright Tagine pots to sell to customers to take home, along with a range of interesting spices.
If you haven’t yet visited Taboon, come in and try something off their exciting menu, or enjoy a delectable Middle Eastern pastry and a coffee for just $5.
